Quite a few years ago, the Dog Gone Scrappy quilt pattern was introduced to the original ScrapTherapy pattern series. The Scottie dog applique pattern is a classic! Collaborating with Mattie from Quiltsmart, I used a very scrappy approach to this pattern while incorporating an interfacing option to make the dog shapes with pieced scrap squares.
The original pattern has instructions to make the quilt with and without the printed interfacing. That pattern has recently been converted to an instant download PDF! The Scottie Dog Dog Gone Scrappy Interfacing is available for shipment too!
This is a really fun quilt to make, and it does indeed help to use scrap fabrics in your stash to make something really fun and scrappy.
Now, why bring this particular pattern up at this particular moment, you might ask.
Well, in my on-going effort to work through class samples and started projects on my storage shelves, Dog Gone Scrappy was up next on the list to get 'er done! And here is the stash-using result inspired by the original ScrapTherapy pattern. . .
If you look closely, you might notice some differences from the original. The 12 blocks are all there, but they're now alternating versions of Scotties and Westies (the white dogs) on alternating black and white backgrounds.
Notice that both dog applique shapes are made from scraps in the images below. However. . .
. . . Some of the blocks in both color value variations were improvised with solid fabric instead of pieced scraps to make the dogs. This was done to move the project along. I only had a few of the scrappy dog shapes in the box of leftover goodies, and the solid fabric dogs saved a bit of time, but still used scrap fabrics for the applique, only in larger scrap sizes.
You may also notice that I improvised the sashing a bit, too. The original design has really scrappy sashing made from 2" squares, creating an opportunity to make a nice dent in the small scrap fabric department. However, the sample from the shelf only had one or two completed scrappy sashing units, so to save a little more time, I used impossible sashing as described here. Black and white fabrics from my stash came in handy to reinforce the alternating white/black theme for the quilt.
Then, of course, it needed a cute border of pups to bring everything together.
One more project from the notorious storage shelf is ready for quilting. Soon, it'll head to the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace for a kid who needs a bed--maybe he or she will be a dog lover, too!
And I bet no one will ever guess that the original design looks a bit different from this project. And no one will care, either.
It's all good!
