Old habits are hard to break.
I've told this story before: When Dave and I go for a walk in the park, or in particular, along the beach, we bring an empty tote bag with us to pick up trash to keep a beautiful spot beautiful. It's just what we do.
Inspired (not in a good way) by the abundance of poorly discarded plastic products, I've built a habit of saying, 'no straw' when I order a soft drink at a restaurant. My friends sometimes make fun of me, but that's fine, I keep asking to exclude the straw (or other unnecessary plastic product) when I place my order. Call me crazzy, but I think every little bit makes a difference.
With that background, there are some small changes coming to the AfterFLOCK kits . . .
Each AfterFLOCK bird block kit has always included - and will continue to include - a small practice unit. The practice unit has two pre-cut bits of fabric in a plastic pattern bag with a half-page of printed instructions and tips for the completion of the practice unit and for the larger laser-cut bird block.
The two fabric pieces make a small 2-1/2" block with two seams. This little block is the warm-up for the featured AfterFLOCK block construction.
Initially, the fabric pieces and instructions where tucked inside a plastic pattern zip-close bag to keep the practice fabrics separate from the bird fabrics. Then, to reduce a tiny bit of bulk I switched to using lip-and-tape bags (shown above).
Now, I have converted the practice unit packaging to a twice-folded slip of paper with the fabric pieces tucked inside and closed with parchment stickers on the top and bottom to hold the fabric within the folds. No more plastic bag!
All the information that was on the practice unit tip sheet is still there.
However, this part of the AfterFLOCK kit packaging is now 'sustainable.' It's going to take a while for the new practice unit packaging to work its way into the kits. However, newest kits will have the new practice unit format from now on.
It's a big milestone for a little detail that makes a difference.
