Pretty sure I've mentioned before that I start each weekday with 1-2 hours at the sewing machine. I've been doing this for years. For me, this is my way to start the day off on a good, positive path. If I miss a morning sewing session or if I'm distracted from forward progress on the things I'm working on, my whole day can be thrown out of whack as a result of that missed sewing opportunity!
For me, this habit started years and years ago, shortly after I took up quilting, while I was employed at a non-quilty job outside of the home. Even one seam before I left for work made a huge difference in my attitude for the day.
Recently, someone mentioned to me that they really need to 'find' time to do more sewing. And that made me stop for a minute. Where does one 'find' time? Is it under a chair or behind the desk? Maybe there's some time tucked in the corner of the basement or off in the far reaches of the attic. I should make a point to look there. However, I'm nervous of what else I could find that would absolutely waste my time!
Of course, I'm joking (sort of), you're never going to 'find' the time to do the thing you love doing unless you 'make' the time for it.
That's what happened so many years ago when I made the time and the commitment each morning to spend 15 minutes of sewing time before work. That turned into a couple hours each day, and I've stuck to it, religiously. If I don't set aside that time just for me and my hobby, I know my day will take off like a rocket and then I'll have lost the opportunity for the day. And when time is lost, it's never recovered, even if you look everywhere for it.
I'm not big on resolutions, but since it's January, maybe its an opportunity to make the time to do that thing you never can 'find' the time to do, even if it's 15 minutes a day for now - at the beginning of the day, the end of the day, or somewhere in the middle. Sewing, stitching, gardening, bird watching, lunch with friends, travel, exercising . . . make a commitment to YOU and start small, then make it a habit.
It will make a huge difference in keeping away the grumblies. And don't we all need to keep the grumblies away, sometimes?
