Studio Ghibli Fest is underway at movie theaters across the country, and this past weekend Dave and I went to the local theater to see one of our favorites. . . My Neighbor Totoro (not My Neighbor Tot, per the movie theater display!).
If you haven't heard of Totoro or Studio Ghibli, don't worry; this has a bit of a cult following - in a good way. Totoro has been around for a while, the movie was originally made in 1988 - Studio Ghibli is a group of animated films made in Japan by Hayao Miyasaki, some of the movies are quite deep, and some have fairly dark story lines.
If this is your first encounter with Totoro, I promise, he's worth a deeper look. If you've got kids or grand kids - especially girls - who are 10 or younger, I'd almost suggest it's required viewing.
The Totoro movie is a refreshing story of two sisters growing up in rural Japan during an era of innocence. It's about believing in the magical things, connecting with nature, being responsible, exploring, and appreciating the simple things. Basically, it's about being a kid before kids relied on electronics and television. Totoro is a friendly forest spirit, and you can only see him if you're young and if you believe.
If you join the trip to Japan with me next summer, you might just hear a little bit more about Totoro. Someone on the trip (a-hem - me!) might be motivated to check out the Studio Ghibli tour in Tokyo, if there's some free time!
Jus' sayn.
