The California Quail is a popular game bird that makes its home in the western US, but has also been introduced successfully in Europe and New Zealand. Its distinctive plume that droops over the front of its head consists of six feathers.

The California Quail is the state bird of California. It spends most of its time foraging on the ground near shrubs and bushes under which it can retreat quickly for protection.
