A few months ago, I received four pieces of printed canvas fabric designed by Lori Holt as a gift. The fabric was cut from a larger panel that included the fabrics needed to make 8 simple pouches, shown below. A piece for the back, two for the front and one handle-tab, plus a zipper! I added fabric for the lining.
Of course, I took the opportunity to change things up a bit. Instead of using the fabric intended for the back, I used it as the lining, so a peak inside the pouch would reveal matching fabric for the back lining. For the back of the pouch, I chose a really cute Acufactum print (below, right). That print is adorable but didn't really go with the whole project--but it goes with me!
This was a perfect opportunity to use my new scallop pinking shears to trim the raw edges to discourage fraying before turning. These scissors are very fun!
With the original pouch complete. I decided to make another one (or two) for gifts. . . . I cut some more fabric in similar sizes to the original pattern. I can't tell you what sizes I cut, because I just sorta estimated from the original panel fabrics.
This turned into a bit of a stash management opportunity--I have a whole bunch of this pink chickadee printed canvas that was purchased by mistake. And I have some leftover double zip zippers that were intended for a different project that never materialized. Two more pouches cut, one finished, one on deck.
More project details:
While the panel included pattern details, the whole project was laid out step by step in Lori Holt's video HERE. (Warning, it's really detailed, and I found myself flipping ahead quite a bit.) Check with your local quilt shop for the panels. I don't know if they are still available anywhere, but there are likely to be more with upcoming fabric lines.
There are two pouch sizes on the panel. No measurements are provided, but the project is quite simple and versatile to a variety of sizes and experimentation. My pouch finished to approximately 15x15".
I used stiff interfacing instead of batting for a bit more structure in the pouch. The video shows a variation on installing the batting without adding bulk at the zipper seam--that was pretty slick.
There you have it. I may make a few more in some different sizes. Because . . . why not!
Enjoy!
