When I left things off last week, I had confessed to some excessive fabric cutting and decided to make some geese in reverse value from the original dark center and light corners.
Been clipping away at creating those extra units. I had enough to put a small handful of blocks on the design wall and see how things are coming.
I like the chevron pattern created by columns of units 'pointing north' alternated with columns of units 'pointing south.' I like this, but I' anticipate that I'll have some bulky seam intersections between vertical rows. I'd like to avoid that, if I can.
So, the plan now, is to add a narrow (maybe 1/2" finished) strip of fabric between the vertical rows.
However, I'm not so keen on the weird horizontal distraction created in every other horizontal row. The dark corner fabrics on the light center Flying Geese blocks create, I think, a distracting element.
I went digging in my stash (not too far) for a different dark-value print to add a bit of variation. . . .
There, I think that helps to add a little random variety to the arrangement.
After plowing through so many blocks without much of a plan, it really helped to throw up a few of the blocks on the design wall to get some direction. Taking a photo also shored up the plan, too. Sometimes the camera sees - or at least emphasizes - what you don't necessarily see with your eyes alone.
Now, I have to finish up the blocks with the dark corners and get serious about a final block layout and quilt size. A fair stretch of sewing is ahead. Should keep me out of trouble for a bit, relatively speaking.
What's on your sewing table today? Do you find a digital photo helps to see your project in a different light?
