About a year ago, after several pandemic-related delays, I was the Featured Educator on a quilt cruise, destination, Hawaii.
The cruise, organized by Quilting Adventures, was fabulous on every measure.
However with every delay and cancellation, the temptation was real to switch the venue from Hawaii to something else. Working with Michelle of Quilting Adventures, we stuck to our guns and set out for Hawaii last January.
Despite limited options as cruising came back, I didn't want to budge from a Hawaii itinerary because I was expecting this trip to be my last quilting cruise.
Until this past weekend. . . . Michelle (from Quilting Adventures) called me, with an opening for an educator and would I consider it? . . .
Yep, I did a *thing* - which was to book another unbelEEEvable trip with Michelle to
ICELAND!
What made me decide to do this *thing* even when I had already decided that I wasn't in the quilting cruise mode any more?
- It's about exploring a unqiue part of the world while learning about a culture and lifestyle very different from my own.
- It's an opportunity to create and share a joyful, brand new project that incorporates hand work and embroidery embellishment in a low-stress, relaxed setting.
- It's NOT your typical quilt cruise--one week, three ports, and too many unfinished projects at the end of the trip.
This is different. Time to interact with everyone in the group. Time to experience a wildly different place and culture. Time to relax with our craft and with new friends.

All the photos that follow aren't mine, but are from a close friend who visited Iceland a couple years ago. . . and she loved her trip!
Now, I'm at the very beginning stages of preparing our project for the trip. Since we'll be far from home, sewing machines won't be involved, so our project will be entirely stitched by hand. It'll be small (wall-hanging size), very relaxing, and might very well include wool applique and embroidery.
You can bet the project will include iconic images from our cruise, like Atlantic Puffins.
Since this is a bona fide vacation, we'll want to take advantage of our surroundings with lots of fun stuff to do.
For example, it won't be a fluke to see a fluke on a whale-watching excursion!
Michelle and I are conspiring with plans to keep things fun: shorter instruction times, plenty of free time and planned group activities on the ship, just for us.
Once on dry land, there are places to go and things to see. . . like the Rainbow Road leading to the Blue Church in Seydisfyordur.
I have recovered from the initial shock of agreeing to join the trip as Featured Educator, and I am caught up with the plans for a quilt project that will please and delight the group. In fact, I'm downright jazzed to start designing and creating our project - a one-of-a-king memento for a one-of-a-kind trip!
I've never been to Iceland! We will start and end the cruise in Amsterdam and make a stop in Norway on the way to Iceland and a stop in Scotland on the return trip. I've never been to any of these places. How exciting is that!
We're going to have an absolutely over-the-top fabulous time.
