If you've been following along, then you know I have targeted a box of leftover quilt parts on a shelf in my sewing studio. I am determined to turn the contents of the box into useable items. First there was a quilt.
Lately, I've been chipping away at a stack of triangles and Half-square Triangle units (HSTs) from the box. To use up the triangles while creating an appealing project, I added coordinating fabrics from other items in the box and from scrap stash . . .
. . . Until only one, lonely HST remained! I will set it free.
Over the last few weeks, from the triangles, I sewed and trimmed each HST to 3" square, then arranged them in a variety of similar but different off-set patterns set in five rows of seven triangle units. I kept sewing and supplementing until I had six place mat centers sewn. I'm now at the stage of adding a 1-1/4" border, which will double as a faux-binding when each place mat is layered and turned envelope-style.
I had enough of this lilac print from the infamous storage box for borders and backing on two of the mats.
For the remaining four mats, I'm using up the rest of the border fabric from the never-ending diamond quilt from a few months back. The border strips are cut and ready to sew.
As for the diamond project, the binding is now sewn, but only about half-way secured to the back of the quilt. Still a work in progress.
Good chance I'll finish up these place mats in the next week or two. There are still one or two more near-complete projects in the box before it's empty. Apparently, I am a very efficient packer! The storage box in question is only about 4" tall and 9x12" wide and long.
. . . And there are still (at least) two more boxes left on the shelf!
