I keep digging around in my 'magic' shelf of set-aside projects. A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that I found some partially constructed mug mats in my stash and I finished them into place mats - I go through place mats like crazy!
In the same box, with the African embroideries, I found some four patches and half-square triangles. Threw together some pinwheel blocks and four-patches, used some of the left over fabrics from making the tote, and made two more place mats virtually out of no where!
I did some simple line quilting using the markings on the walking foot.

With those small projects complete, I opened yet another Pandora's box on that bottomless shelf of forgotten projects.
There is a bunch of stuff in this bin - including a couple small quilt tops and some fabric bundles.

This stack of pieced blocks caught my attention. They have a 'plaid' feel to them.
I sensed another place mat project coming on! But there were only 10 blocks, I needed two more.
This fabric combo was also in the 'magic' box. I immediately saw the seeds of the rest of the project germinating and growing.
I have no idea if there was a plan at some point for these blocks ( which measured 5" square) or for the fabrics.
But there is now!

It's a simple block - it's a nine-patch, with four-patch corners and two-patch sides. Easy and fun to make . . .

In a pinch, two more blocks, sashing from the dark purple from the magic box from the magic shelf and . . .
POOF!
Two more placemats, bordered with stash fabric and ready to be backed, turned, and quilted.
I may need to explore this cute little block a bit more. . .
But not until this little packet of strip-pieced blocks from the same magical storage box is 'handled' - another placemat? We'll see!

I've been on a bit of a tear lately to finish up stuff that has been stored away and forgotten. It's very satisfying, fun--and economical.
I have always disliked the clutter, inefficiency, and GUILT sometimes associated with unfinished items.
What's lurking in your magical storage boxes on your magical bottomless shelves?
