More 'things' this week, but they're different from last week's 'thing.'
After finishing up and donating five quilts that were languishing as quilt tops on a laundry drying rack in my basement work room, I'm back in the piecing 'business,' while giving my sewing machine a break from quilting. The sewing machine badly needs a service/spa day before I tackle more quilting, and my technician is out of town until March.
This upper corner shelf in my workroom holds many in-progress quilts that have been used as class demos over the years. There are at least 20 parts and partial quilts that either need to be 'filed' elsewhere or finished and put into use.
One such project is the next one on deck for completion. It's Thing One (borrowing some terminology, with respect, from Dr. Seuss).
From the book, The Versatile Nine Patch, I created a partially-constructed sample of "Split the Check" years ago, featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics.
After a few extra seams, I have enough blocks from the parts in the storage container to make a small quilt and thereby empty the container (yay!).
I love the fabrics I selected way back when, but they really don't highlight the pattern as much as they should. Not one of my better fabric choices for this demonstration project.
I don't have enough fabrics in the container to make more blocks, but I may add some borders to get this to twin-size. We'll see, first I have to assemble the blocks.
Thing Two is an 'old' thing, but good thing. I'm continuing my quest to eliminate a stack of 1.5" scrap squares from my stash. In the process I have unearthed mega quantities of scrappy strips to make these really fun blocks.
Coordinate fabrics are cut for at least two more of these scrap buster quilts in twin size.
And I may just keep going to use up some other coordinate yardage (and scrap squares and strips). Instead of white, I have a good amount of solid light blue, ecru, and pink fabrics that would work well with this scrappy concept.
My plan is to turn this block into a freebie pattern that I'll provide here in this newsletter when the pattern is complete. Meanwhile, HERE IS a detailed review of the steps, if you want to join in the scrappy fun and can't wait for the 'official' pattern.
And there is a Thing Two-A. I thought I might try this block in an un-scrappy version. I just love this blue and white leafy print, but I'm not sure it works with this pattern. Two blocks isn't enough for a good test.
I think two-color quilts are elegant, and I rarely make them. Although this tangent project doesn't enhance my scrap-eating plan, but hey, I'm good with it.
